Introduction As always, greetings to all readers of “Daltons in History”!! First and foremost as the festive season comes ever nearer, I wish all readers a very Happy Christmas. May you all enjoy a special and peaceful time with your families, loved ones and friends. I always think this time is particularly special for those of us who enjoy family history – it provides an opportunity to renew contact with an extended family, comprising all those who are part of that wider group that we study as part of our family history researches. The Dalton Genealogical Society embraces an enormous extended and worldwide family of all those with an interest in Dalton family history, and the Society, coupled with its officers and committee members, extends the season’s greetings to you all. Since the last issue of “Daltons in History” was uploaded in mid-November, the DGS officers and committee have continued to be very busy working on further new developments for DGS members and for the wider community of visitors to this website. Let me remind you about the new subscription and membership renewal pages launched last month, where you can now join the DGS from all corners of the globe and use a variety of payment methods – including PayPal, credit or debit card, bank transfer, standing order or cheque (check). For those who are UK taxpayers, you can Gift Aid your subscription, which will increase its value to the Society as a registered charity by 25%. All of this has been implemented to make it as easy as possible to join the DGS and continue to pay your subscription each year, with maximum value to you and to the Society. Last month we also updated the page for ordering back numbers of the DGS Journal, offering significant savings on bulk orders and again offering a wide range of payment methods. And we have now published our latest DNA Report for all participants in our project, who are members of the DGS. The new DGS website, “Daltons in History” 2.0 (DiH2.0 for short) is now well and truly up and running. Further developments are in hand and there is more about this below. And, following a visit to Norfolk by four committee members last month, we now announce the details of the 2014 DGS Gathering, being held in Norfolk, England on Fri/Sat/Sun 12/13/14 September. Much more about all these things below, together with the usual updates on the Society, its events, its publications and its projects. Please read on! Changing faces on the DGS Committee Pamela Lynam, who has been an officer of the Society for 20 years, has announced that she wishes to retire from her position as DGS General Secretary and Membership Secretary at the next AGM of the Society in September 2014. Pam was appointed as the Society’s Minutes Secretary in 1993 and took over from the late Lucy Slater as Executive Secretary in 2000. When David Kirkley resigned as Membership Secretary in 2004, Pam took on his role as well, and has held both responsibilities since then. Many thanks are due to Pam for her service to the DGS over so many years. It is Pam’s wish to remain as a member of the committee and we will welcome her continued active involvement in that capacity. Following discussions, Howard Dalton, our present Treasurer, has agreed to take over the maintenance and updating of the membership database, a task that we feel can be performed more efficiently by the Treasurer. Mike F Dalton, currently a DGS committee member and organiser for the 2014 Gathering in Norfolk, has offered to become the Society’s Secretary, and he and I will work closely together on the future development of the Society. Howard and Mike will both work closely with Pam between now and the 2014 AGM to ensure a smooth handover of responsibilities. The appointment of Mike as DGS Secretary will be formalised at the AGM. As a UK registered charity, the Society has to appoint trustees who are responsible for ensuring that the charitable objectives of the Society, as set out in our constitution, are fulfilled. The constitution makes provision for the appointment, by the committee from amongst its members, of not less than three and not more than six trustees. The committee has recently reviewed this and determined that there shall be five trustees. The five committee members appointed as trustees are myself as Chairman, with Sir Geoffrey Dalton, Howard J Dalton, John Dalton and Pamela Lynam. The 2014 DGS Gathering, Norfolk, England For 2014 the DGS Annual Gathering will be held at The Park Farm Hotel at Hethersett, near Norwich in Norfolk, England. Norfolk is still a very unspoilt part of England with its rolling landscape, its Saxon and Norman churches, its Roman and medieval castles, its thatched cottages and pubs and a plethora of small country roads to explore. It is also very accessible to visitors from both the UK and overseas. The Gathering will take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday 13, 14, 15 September 2014. It will showcase what the DGS offers to members and it will provide a forum where everyone with an interest in Dalton family history will be welcome to join us for the weekend. There will be a programme of short talks and visits over the weekend which, we hope, has relevance to Daltons from many different backgrounds and will also include some sessions about Dalton family history relevant to Norfolk. On the Friday afternoon we will hold the 2014 Annual General Meeting. Full details of the Gathering arrangements, an outline programme and information about registering as a delegate to attend the weekend will be found in a separate section of this issue of “Daltons in History” below. These details will be carried in the “Forthcoming Gatherings” section of this website during the coming months, and all DGS members will also receive them as a separate booklet enclosed with Volume 59 of the DGS Journal for December 2013, due to be published and despatched in early January. I am most grateful to DGS Committee Member Mike F Dalton, who lives in Norfolk, for his work to date as 2014 Gathering Organiser. “Daltons in History” 2.0 (DiH2.0 for short) Our new website, “Daltons in History” or DiH2.0 for short, has been launched to DGS members over the past couple of months. It has both an unrestricted presence available to all, and sections for DGS members only. It also includes enhanced use of social media – Facebook, Twitter etc. DiH2.0 has now been rolled out to nearly all of the DGS membership worldwide. Registration details, usernames and passwords have been issued to paid up members for whom we have an up to date email address registered with the Society. This enables members to access the restricted areas of the site, and enjoy the substantial benefits that the new site brings. Any DGS member who has not received an email notification of their username and password should email their local secretary with a request to be registered for DiH2.0. Alongside this exciting new development, the main DGS website at www.daltongensoc.com, the Dalton Data Bank (www.daltondatabank.org), the Dalton Forum (http://daltonamericas.org/messageboard/) and the other North American DGS websites (accessed via www.daltonamericas.org/) all continue, and remain with open access for all. Each month we will continue to bring you “Daltons in History” on the main DGS website, in a format which is changing and will evolve over the next few months. It will continue to include my Chairman’s Notes, together with other news items and articles, some taken from DiH2.0 and made available in the public domain. We are still having discussions about some of the details of this, and about DiH2.0 itself, and we want to be as responsive as possible to our membership. Therefore all members are invited to make observations and comments about the new website and contribute to its success. We want the new site to serve all DGS members as well as it possibly can, and we also want to encourage more of those with an interest in Dalton family history to join the Society, and take advantage of what will be an ever growing and ever more valuable resource. Future DGS events Mention has already been made above of the 2014 Gathering and AGM taking place in Norfolk, England over the weekend of Fri/Sat/Sun 12/13/14 September. We hope to return to the United States and visit Virginia in 2015. It has also been proposed that we return to South Wales, UK in 2016. The DGS committee is actively taking these plans forward and we will be making further more detailed announcements during 2014 about locations and dates. So watch this space! We like to plan ahead and explore other options for our annual gathering events, so if you have any particular thoughts about where you might like to meet, or a particular Dalton theme you think we should incorporate, we really do want to hear from you with your ideas. The Dalton International DNA Project (DIDP) Our DNA project continues to attract considerable interest with a regular stream of enquiries about joining being received by myself and Karen Dalton Preston as administrators of the project. The latest report has now been published and made available to all project participants that are paid up members of the DGS in the members only area of our new DiH2.0 website. A small sub-committee of the main DGS committee has been established to oversee the future development of DIDP, and this month’s issue of “Daltons in History” includes a separate section below, which gives a full update on the scope of the new report and the plans for the project in 2014. The DGS Journal Volume 59 of the DGS Journal for December 2013 is due to be printed and distributed to members in early January. As always this issue of our award winning Journal will contain much of interest. If you are not a DGS member, please consider joining the Society. This will entitle you to receive the Journal regularly, and much more. Full details are in the recently updated “Join the DGS” section of this website, or just click here. John Dalton, our Editor, always welcomes articles and other items for publication in the Journal, and material for publication should be sent to him as early as possible. This will enable him to plan the content of future issues. John is happy to advise and assist contributors and, if you have any questions or need help, please contact him by email at johndalton78@hotmail.com. Back issues of all DGS Journals are available. These can be purchased individually, or in collections at attractive prices. Binders are also available. Full details will be found on the recently updated pages for the "DGS Journal Index" section of this website, or just click here. You will also find a full synopsis of the contents of the Journal of the Dalton Genealogical Society commencing with Volume 1 published back in 1970 through to Volume 41 published in December 2004. Lists of contents are given for Volumes 42 to 58 and the full synopses will be uploaded in due course. We are most grateful to DGS member Mrs Pat Robinson, who holds stocks of back numbers for the Society and arranges for their distribution in response to requests from the local secretaries (address: Mallards, 3 High Street, The Green, Barrington, Cambridge CB2 5QX, UK email: gandprobinson@waitrose.com.) Conclusion Enjoy this issue of "Daltons in History", your regular update on everything that is happening in the world of Dalton family history. We will be back again in mid-January. Thank you for your attention and please do send your articles, notes and snippets of information for publication in “Daltons in History” to me (email: michaelndalton@aol.com) Yours very sincerely

Karen Dalton Preston, DGS North American Secretary writes: Here it is December already and our thoughts are turning to preparing for the Christmas festivities. Family get togethers with the extended family are a wonderful opportunity to ask relatives about the family tree. I wish I had done more of this when my grandparents were still living. I know there were probably many stories of their early life that are lost now. So, capture these family stories while there is still time!
As a reminder, the perfect gift for the Dalton genealogist on your gift list is a DGS Gift Membership. Your gift will be accompanied by a lovely certificate, in PDF format, which you you can print for gift-giving, or email it to the recipient to announce your gift. Why not combine the gift of membership with a DNA test kit from Family Tree DNA? Once again, FamilyTree DNA, our testing service for the Dalton Int'l DNA Project, is offering special sale prices through December 31st. There is more information of the Family Tree DNA web site at - www.familytreedna.com To order a gift membership, please contact me at karen@golden-hills.com, and provide the name, address and email for the individual. WebTrees I would like to introduce members to the WebTrees area of the members-only web site. We now have a safe and secure way to share your Dalton family tree with other members. WebTrees can be found on the D in H 2.0 web site under the "Private: Dalton Family Trees" tab in the menu on the left side of the screen. Access is provided with the same username and password that you use for D in H 2.0. Once you are on the Family Trees page, you'll find a Help & Frequently Asked Questions section and a "go to Trees Site" link. The "Help" section will give you a short overview of the capabilities of WebTrees and some tips for logging-on and navigating the site. This provides an area where members can post their family tree. Other members can view your tree, but only the owner of the tree can make changes or add information. This is a wonderful way to share your Dalton research with other members, and collaborate with those who are researching the same Dalton family lines. We already have several trees that can be viewed on the site. Most recently, our new member Robert L. Dalton in Missouri has posted his complete family tree with over 4,400 individuals, going back to Michael Dalton of Cambridge, England, born about 1564. Robert's tree also includes images of many family photos documents that relate to his tree. To add your family tree, please contact the webmaster, using the link on the WebTrees site. You will need to have your tree in GEDCOM format, along with image files for any documents, such obituaries or marriage certificates, which can be linked to the individuals in your tree. Please contact the webmaster using the link on the WebTrees site. New Members: Please join me in welcoming the following new members to the DGS: Jeff Dalton, Reston, VA Robert and Barbara Dalton, Union, MO In closing, I would like to wish all our members and readers a very Merry Christmas and a New Year filled with new genealogical discoveries! Mike F Dalton, DGS Committee Member and 2014 Gathering Organiser, introduces the arrangements for this event, taking place in Norfolk in September next year. This follows the planning meeting he held in Norfolk with Michael Neale Dalton, DGS Chairman, Pam Lynam, DGS Secretary and Maureen Collins, DGS Australian Secretary, in November 2013, when the more detailed arrangements for the weekend were discussed and agreed. For 2014 the DGS Annual Gathering will be held at The Park Farm Hotel at Hethersett, near Norwich in Norfolk, a county of England which has seen many invasions over the centuries, Romans, Angles, Jutes, Saxons, Vikings and Normans so a few Daltons won’t trouble the locals who are a very friendly bunch! Although part of modern Britain, Norfolk is still very much Old England. A rolling landscape which has Saxon and Norman churches, Roman and medieval castles, thatched cottages and pubs and a plethora of small country roads to explore. The international airports of Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted are all within easy travelling distance and, if you wish to explore further afield the port of Harwich will give you access to The Netherlands, Germany and beyond after a relaxing 8 hour cruise across the North Sea; or a 2 hour drive to the Channel Tunnel will put you on a car-train which can whisk you to France in 35 minutes. The North of England and Scotland are only a few hours away by car, train or plane. Cambridge is nearby and London, with the National Public Records Office at Kew and many other attractions, is only a couple of hours away by road or rail. The Gathering will take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday 12/13/14 September 2014. It will showcase what the DGS offers to members and it will provide a forum where we can not only enjoy the company of those we will be seeing again, but also welcome new attendees and learn about their roots. A programme of short talks and visits has been put together which we hope will have a relevance to Daltons of many different backgrounds, but with a flavouring of the Dalton history relevant to Norfolk. On Saturday afternoon there will be workshop sessions held by each speaker at the Gathering who will be available to handle any queries you may have, and also to assist you with advice relevant to your research. Also available for examination will be every DGS Journal since Volume 1 published in 1970, and a considerable amount of research material and resources from the DGS collection together with an adviser to guide you. The talks given will be on a wide range of subjects, reflecting the scope of the Society with members in so many countries. The local theme will be highlighted by talks on the Norfolk Daltons and the Daltons of East Anglia. There will be a review of the history of Daltons in Ireland and news on the development of the Dalton Family Relational Database, as well as an update on the new Daltons in History 2.0 (DiH2.0) website. Many of us have taken part in the Dalton International DNA Project and one of our talks will be on using advanced DNA results to further our knowledge and researches. English and American Dalton families will not be forgotten with an overview of these, summaries of progress to date and views on where to take research next. On the Friday the DGS Annual General Meeting will take place. This is open to all DGS members and others attending the Gathering weekend. Many of you may want to extend your stay in this part of Old England and just some of Norfolk’s many attractions are:
All of these opportunities are available close by and if you require further details on anything that is of particular interest to you, all you have to do is ask. Email me at mfdalton@btconnect.com. My wife Kate and I look forward to seeing you in September 2014. You will be very welcome, and if you have not already done so, why not bring a copy of your family tree for inclusion in the members area of the Daltons in History 2.0 website? Our members are very knowledgeable and the interchange of experience and information, as well as making new contacts, will be a key part of the weekend. The formal and informal social parts of the weekend are ideal opportunities to expand your knowledge. We are anticipating a very good response for the Gathering so please book early if you intend to stay in the lovely family run hotel we have carefully chosen for the venue. There are, of course, other hotels and B&Bs in the neighbourhood if you cannot firm up your plans until later. If we can be of any assistance or if you need any further information please do not hesitate to contact us at mfdalton@btconnect.com Best regards Mike F Dalton For details of the planned programme and how to register as a delegate, please read on! The Chairman’s Notes in this issue of “Daltons in History” refer to the recent publication of the latest DNA Project Progress Report. Here we reproduce the foreword to this report, written by the project administrators Michael Neale Dalton and Karen Dalton Preston, and this provides an update on the current status of the project. All DGS members registered to access our new members only website, Daltons in History 2.0 will find the full report posted there. The second part of this update repeats the details of the Family Tree DNA Sale, which commenced last month and runs through to 31 December 2013. The sale is an ideal opportunity for new project participants to join, and for existing participants to upgrade their tests at very advantageous prices. DIDP has reached an exciting stage in its development and we look forward to taking further significant steps with the project during 2014. Foreword to the Dalton International DNA Project Progress Report and Analysis published in November 2013 The Dalton International DNA Project (DIDP), was officially launched in May 2003, and continues to develop and expand. Ours was one of the early projects to be established, and as we celebrate the tenth anniversary of Dalton DNA testing we now have 181 participants and remain at the forefront of this new genealogical science. The tenth anniversary of the project is a fitting time to take stock of what we have achieved in the last decade, and to think ahead about how we want to take the project forward. With this in mind, we are taking this opportunity to re-define DIDP, and to put the focus back onto genealogical research, the means for documenting our links together. To mark this shift, we have revised the structure of our reporting, and this is reflected in the layout of this report. DNA tests remain a crucial tool within our genealogical research activities, simply because the test results are the only effective means of telling us precisely to which Daltons we are each most closely related. Instead of relying on a potentially inaccurate geographical connection, or a family story, the DNA results pinpoint exactly which Daltons we should be working with in order to research and document the Dalton family tree that we share together. Changes have been introduced in this edition of the project report, which has two major sections. The first details those project members who have origins in the UK or Ireland as defined by their genealogy or through genetic association; and the second shows those members who do not yet have an identified connection to the UK or Ireland. The significance of this distinction is explained in the write ups for each Family Group in the report. DIDP is run by Michael Neale Dalton and Karen Dalton Preston working with other Family Group coordinators, on behalf of the Dalton Genealogical Society. Michael and Karen are also the administrators for our DNA testing programme, which is hosted at Family Tree DNA. We are assisted by Chris Pomery who has been chartered to analyse our results and advise us how to develop the project. Chris established a DNA project for his own Pomeroy family back in 2000, has published two books on DNA and family history, and regularly lectures on the subject. Our project is being moved forward by the coordinators for the four major Family Groups identified through our DNA results:
Michael, Karen, Melanie and Mike are the members of the DGS DIDP sub-committee, which reports to the main DGS committee and retains Chris as its consultant. Our project also includes several smaller Genetic Families, some with coordinators and others still in need of one. If you are a member of one of the groups without a coordinator, we would welcome your help. We would like to thank all of those who have come forward to be tested. It is your participation that helps our project to continue to grow, and with your help we hope to identify the ancient origins of all our Dalton ancestors. Michael Neale Dalton and Karen Dalton Preston The Family Tree DNA Sale Family Tree DNA, who provide the testing service for the Dalton International DNA Project have announced a holiday sale which is running through until 31 December 2013. Details are as follows: Holiday Sale The Family Tree DNA holiday sale has begun and is running through until 31 December. This sale includes new orders, upgrades and 23andMe/AncestryDNA transfers: Y-DNA tests for new orders
Family Finder tests and Autosomal transfer
Y-DNA test upgrades
If you wish to join the Dalton International DNA Project, go to our project page on the Family Tree DNA web site at: www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Dalton-International If you are a Dalton male with descent in the male line from Daltons, we recommend that you take the 37 marker Y-DNA test, now priced at $119. If you are an existing participant in the Dalton International DNA Project, go to your personal homepage on the Family Tree DNA website, where you will be able to order your upgrade at the special prices quoted above. We particularly recommend that all participants who have only taken 12 or 25 marker tests previously upgrade to 37 markers (the costs are only $69 or $35 respectively). You might wish to consider a Family Finder test, an upgrade to 67 or 111 markers on your Y-DNA test, or a transfer of your results from 23 and Me or Ancestry DNA into our project at Family Tree DNA. Advice and guidance on all these various options can be found on the Family Tree DNA website. If you are not sure, or you need assistance with this, do please contact either Michael Neale Dalton (michaelndalton@aol.com) or Karen Dalton Preston (karen@golden-hills.com), the joint administrators of the Dalton International DNA Project. We will be pleased to help you and the earlier you can contact us, the easier it will be for us to have time to do this. Do not leave it until the days between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, if you want to be certain of placing your order by the 31 December deadline, and thus take advantage of the sale prices. |
This is something that has recently arrived in the Chairman’s email inbox from the Federation of Family History Societies: Beryl Evans, FFHS Archives Liaison Officer writes about a new and valuable research tool: A unique digital archive “The Welsh Experience of the First World War” (cymru1914.org) has been launched. It has been developed as a collaborative initiative led by The National Library of Wales, in partnership with the Archives and Special Collections of Wales (partners are Aberystwyth University; Bangor University, Cardiff University; Swansea University; the University of Wales Trinity St David; BBC Cymru Wales, The People’s Collection, Wales, and archives and local records offices that are part of ARCW: the Archives and Records Council of Wales). The project was funded by a £500,000 grant from the Jisc e-Content programme as part of their work in support of education and research, and through support from the partner organisations. Do visit cymru1914.org– just enter “Dalton” in the search engine, and you will find hundreds of Dalton references in newspapers, archives and journals published during the First World War. This is a superb resource for anyone with Welsh ancestry and I know that there are many projects across the UK which have been set up to coincide with the centenary of the War. |
The minutes of the 2013 AGM held in Dublin back in July were published in the October issue of "Daltons in History". At the time it was not possible to publish the Society's accounts for 2012. Our new Treasurer has now completed these accounts and they are reproduced below. |
