Chapter IV     The missing link is that between Walter
Dalton I of Oxfordshire and the Daltons of Lancashire or Yorkshire.
Here Mr. Hamilton tries to trace back from Walter and discusses the will
of a William Dalton of Witney who died in 1563 and had a son
"Water".  His widow Jone left her estate to her son Walter.
Another son, Thomas had died or moved away.  There are several
documents surviving which mention a William Dalton of Witney as a chantry
priest, as the owner of land, and as a mercer.  So there may have
been three men alive at the same time, in the same village, with the same
name.  Walter Dalton the first was a mercer, who became prominent in
the affairs of Witney.  His will is given at length, together with
      his inventory dated 1628. |

    Richards  |

    |   This short paper outlines the descendants of Samuel Dalton born
1692, emigrated to America and lived to be 110.  He owned a lot of
land in Virginia and was connected by marriage with several well known
American families.  His grand niece Catherine Bird wrote to her
nephew William Yancey that they may have been connected to a Lord Dalton
of Yorkshire who had died about 1771 leaving £1,000,000 unclaimed. |

    p.21 |

    |   This article continues the discussion about the three Walter
Daltons of Whitney, with a description of the will of Walter Dalton the
second and the few facts we have about Walter Dalton the third.  The
entries in an old family bible give some very different facts about the
three Walters when compared with parish records and wills.  An
attempt is made to reconcile these differences.  But despite careful
searching by the author, no final conclusions are reached.  Many
possible lines are suggested for further research into the family history
of the three Walters of Whitney.  |

    |   This was held at Brighton at the home of Hannah Joyce Parker,
together with the Annual Gathering of the Society.  The financial
position of the Society was discussed and a new constitution was
adopted.  This will enable the Society to be registered as a
    charity. |
